The school gym smelled like popcorn and tape. A small stage stood at the front. Paper stars hung from the ceiling. It was the night of the talent show, and everyone felt excited. Mr. Dorian, the art teacher, walked on stage with a box. He smiled in a strange way. “Our winner tonight will get a very special trophy,” he said. He opened the box. Inside was a clay face. It looked a lot like a famous movie star. Big jaw. Perfect hair. Even the tiny smile looked real. The students gasped. “Did you make that?” someone shouted. “Yes,” said Mr. Dorian. “One of a kind.” Leo sat in the front row. He loved weird things. And this was the weirdest trophy he had ever seen. “I want that,” he whispered. Soon the talent show began. A girl sang loudly. A boy played drums on lunch trays. Two twins did magic with socks. But nobody cared about winning before. Now everyone wanted the clay face. Leo stared at the trophy on the table. The movie star’s clay eyes seemed to look right at him. And Leo made a decision. He would win that face. No matter what.

Backstage became wild. Students practiced strange talents. One boy tried to juggle oranges. Another tried to bark like five different dogs. Leo paced in a circle. “What is your talent?” asked his friend Maya. “I don’t know,” Leo said. “I just need something amazing.” Maya looked at the stage. A kid was trying to balance three chairs. “That trophy made everyone crazy,” she said. Leo looked again at the clay face. It sat under a small light. The smile looked calm. Almost proud. “I can do comedy,” Leo said. “You?” Maya laughed. “Yes. I will make everyone laugh.” Leo walked onto the stage when his turn came. He grabbed the microphone. “My name is Leo,” he said. “And today I will teach you how to act like a famous movie star.” The crowd leaned forward. Leo puffed his chest. He spoke in a deep voice. He walked in slow motion. He flipped his hair. The crowd burst out laughing. Leo pointed at the trophy. “Step one,” he said. “Always make your face look like clay.” The students laughed even louder. Leo felt hope rise inside him. Maybe he could win.

After Leo finished, the show became even stranger. A girl tried to rap about math homework. A boy did twenty push-ups while singing opera. Someone brought a rubber chicken orchestra. Each act tried to be louder and funnier than the last. Backstage, students whispered. “That clay face is worth it.” “I want it for my desk.” “I want it for my locker.” Leo sat with Maya and watched the stage. “I think I did great,” Leo said. “You did,” Maya said. “But look.” She pointed. Ethan walked onto the stage. Ethan was famous at school for doing extreme things. He carried a ladder. “Oh no,” Leo said. Ethan climbed the ladder on stage. Then he stood on the top step. The crowd gasped. “I will recite the school rules,” Ethan said loudly, “while standing on one foot.” He lifted one foot. Then he began speaking very fast. The audience laughed and cheered. Leo felt his stomach sink. “That is big,” Maya said. Ethan finished and jumped down. The crowd clapped hard. Leo looked again at the clay trophy. Now it felt much farther away.

The judges met at a small table. They whispered and wrote notes. Students waited in loud groups. Leo kicked the gym floor. “I should have done something bigger,” he said. Maya looked thoughtful. “Wait,” she said. “You still have time.” “What do you mean?” “There is one final act,” Maya said. “A surprise act. The teachers always do one.” Leo blinked. “What if… you join them?” Before Leo could answer, the lights dimmed. Mr. Dorian walked on stage again. “For our final act,” he said, “the teachers will perform a short play.” Three teachers walked out wearing silly hats. Leo suddenly ran forward. Maya gasped. “Leo!” Leo jumped onto the stage. “May I help?” he asked loudly. The teachers looked surprised. Then they shrugged. Leo began acting like a movie star again. But this time he copied each teacher. When the math teacher spoke, Leo made the same face behind him. When the coach walked proudly, Leo copied the walk. The crowd roared with laughter. Even the teachers laughed. Mr. Dorian wiped tears from his eyes. Leo took a deep bow. The gym shook with clapping.

The judges returned to the stage. Everyone went quiet. Mr. Dorian held the clay trophy. “The winner,” he said slowly, “is Leo.” Leo froze. “Really?” he whispered. The crowd cheered. Leo walked up and took the clay face. It felt cool and heavy in his hands. The movie star smile looked even funnier up close. Students gathered around him. “Let me see!” “That is amazing!” “Put it in the light!” Leo turned it around. Then something strange happened. The clay nose slipped. It fell off. The crowd gasped. Leo stared. The inside was hollow. And there was a small note inside. Leo pulled it out. He read it aloud. “Congratulations. You have discovered the secret art lesson.” Everyone looked confused.

Mr. Dorian laughed. “The trophy was never the real prize,” he said. Students groaned. Leo held the broken clay face. “Then what was the prize?” Maya asked. Mr. Dorian pointed at the stage. “Look what happened tonight,” he said. “You all tried new things. You made people laugh. You were brave.” The students looked at each other. The rubber chicken orchestra kid raised his hand. “That was kind of fun,” he admitted. Ethan nodded. “I never recited school rules before.” Leo looked at the clay face again. The missing nose made it look even sillier. He started laughing. Soon everyone else laughed too. Mr. Dorian handed Leo the nose. “You can glue it later,” he said. Leo placed the clay face on his head like a mask. “I am now a famous movie star,” he said in a deep voice. The gym exploded with laughter again. Leo walked off the stage with Maya. He still held the strange trophy. And now it was even funnier than before.
